Our Formulations
Every Blue River Diet starts with one question: what does a crested gecko eat in the wild, and what changes when it lives in an enclosure?
Our recipes are shaped by what we have seen on our research expeditions to New Caledonia. Each one leads with real fruit, then adds quality protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals while keeping fat controlled, so geckos get the nutrition they need without the extra calories a captive lifestyle does not burn off.

Why a Low-Fat Diet Matters
Wild crested geckos work for their food. In captivity the same gecko is fed regularly and moves far less, so the energy balance tips the other way.
In the wild
- Fruit and insects come and go with the wet and dry seasons
- Every meal has to be found, often by climbing and searching
- Energy taken in is roughly matched by energy used
In captivity
- Food is offered on a reliable schedule
- Very little effort is needed to feed
- Spare energy is stored as body fat
Over time, that surplus can lead to obesity and fatty liver disease, and it can shorten a gecko’s life. Keeping fat low in the diet itself is the simplest way to close the gap, which is why every recipe is built around lean protein and controlled fat.
Keeper note
Metabolic bone disease is not caused by excess fat. It is linked to too little calcium or vitamin D3, often alongside poor UVB lighting. That is why every recipe includes calcium carbonate and vitamin D3 as well as keeping fat low.

What Goes Into Every Pouch
Each ingredient has a job. Here is what goes in and why.
The key ingredients

Real Fruit
Natural sugars · fibre · vitamins
The first ingredient in every flavour. Gives the diet the taste of the fruit crested geckos seek out in the wild, along with fibre, vitamins and antioxidants.

Soya Protein Isolate
Plant protein
Easily digested and low in fat, with the essential amino acids geckos need for muscle growth and repair.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Insect protein · Fruit & Bug
Dried black soldier fly larvae make up 15% of Fruit & Bug, adding insect protein to reflect the insects wild geckos eat alongside fruit.

Coconut
Energy from MCTs
Coconut fibre and milk powder feature in every recipe. Coconut’s medium-chain triglycerides are absorbed and used for energy more readily than many other fats.

Honey Powder
Natural sweetness
A touch of natural sweetness that helps tempt fussy eaters. Phelsuma Passion has extra honey and bee pollen for day geckos.

Bee Pollen
Vitamins · minerals · antioxidants
A natural source of protein, vitamins and minerals that supports immune health and overall wellbeing.

Postbiotics
Gut health
Dried Lactobacillus helveticus, included as a postbiotic to support a balanced gut and healthy digestion.

Calcium and Vitamin D3
Strong bones · healthy growth
Every recipe includes calcium carbonate and vitamin D3. Calcium builds strong bones, and vitamin D3 helps the body absorb and use it.
Staying Fresh in the Enclosure
Every recipe includes potassium sorbate, a nature-identical preservative, to help keep the mixed diet fresh once it is in the enclosure. Remove any uneaten food after 24 hours, as the pack directs.
